FAQ About a Facelift in Orange County
The surgical team at UC Irvine often fields questions about facelift surgery. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions and answers. If you have other questions, please consult with your plastic surgeon at UC Irvine.
How does it work?
A facelift is an advanced surgical technique in which your plastic surgeon may incorporate a variety of techniques. Most commonly, it is performed with a local anesthetic and you will sleep through the procedure. After your face has been cleansed, your plastic surgeon will make incisions behind your hairline at your temples, extending down in front of your ear and ending behind your earlobe. These will be hidden in the natural contours of your skin. From here, your plastic surgeon will separate the tissues and remove any excess skin or tissue that leads to the drooping appearance of your lower face. When the appropriate amount of tissue has been removed, your plastic surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and apply a surgical dressing.
What happens after surgery?
Following your facelift, you will need a ride home and someone to help you at home for several days. The recovery time for a facelift can be up to three weeks. During this time, you will have a protective bandage on your head that may need to be changed out. It is not uncommon to experience swelling and discomfort during this time. Your plastic surgeon will prescribe medication to manage any pain. You will need to take care to keep your head elevated for several days. After one week, your sutures may be removed.
