Breast Implant Options
Living a short car ride from the beach has its many perks. With Newport and Huntington Beach as your backyard, you are never too far from a nice walk along the boardwalk or a quick oceanside getaway. However, if you are self-conscious about your figure, more specifically about the look of your breasts, you may often feel the need to cover up your body even in the hot California sun. Changes in your breasts will occur over time, whether due to aging, weight loss, or the many effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding. For Costa Mesa women wanting to regain their confidence and enhance the appearance of their breasts, breast augmentation at UCI Plastic Surgery continues to be an incredibly popular option.
Breast Enhancement for All Women
It doesn’t matter if you are a mother looking to restore breast volume lost during pregnancy, or a young woman uncomfortable with disproportionate or smaller breasts – there is a breast augmentation procedure that can be personalized to your own unique needs. Over the past decade, breast enhancement surgery has skyrocketed in popularity due to the increasing number of options and innovations that are made available to the everyday woman.
We will work carefully with you to design a treatment plan that will best achieve your goal while keeping in mind other factors, such as your physical size and shape. No woman will be a master of the breast augmentation procedure when she comes in for her consultation. The many options can seem overwhelming at first, but we will help guide you through the process to ensure that you feel comfortable in making informed decisions.
Your breast implant options include:
- Breast implant type (silicone gel or saline)
- Breast implant size
- Breast implant shape and profile
- Breast implant placement (over or under the pectoral muscle)
- Incision location
You may feel more comfortable making some decisions than others. For example, while you have your heart set on silicone breast implants, you may feel unsure about the placement of the implants. Our staff of highly trained plastic surgeons will help to provide you with recommendations that will best achieve your ideal look.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Your breast augmentation will last only about an hour. Once you are under general anesthesia, we will begin by making a discrete incision. Based on what was discussed during your consultation, this may be around the areola, along the crease beneath the breast, or in the pit of your arm. Your plastic surgeon will then create a pocket in which the implant will sit – either above or beneath your pectoral muscle. Silicone implants are placed pre-filled, whereas saline implants are not filled until they have been put into place. Once your implants have been properly placed, your incisions are closed and any necessary bandages are applied.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Now that your surgery is complete, you will begin noticing improvements in the look and feel of your breasts with each passing day. Bruising and swelling is completely normal in the beginning, so it is important to be patient throughout the initial healing. Most women are able to return to work after about 48 hours, but remember to take it easy for the first few weeks.
As your body heals, your breasts will appear younger, firmer and more feminine. Our patients often speak of how their new breasts help them feel more confident, not just in a bra or bikini, but even in a simple shirt and jeans.
Types of Implants
Breast augmentations are performed with one of two types of implants: silicone or saline. While both are safe and effective options for your enhancement surgery, each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Silicone is by far the most popular type of implant used in breast augmentation procedures today. Since first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006 for use in women 22 years of age and older (and are available to women of any age for breast reconstruction), the current generation of silicone gel implants have consistently become more common. In 2016, silicone implants were used in 84 percent of all breast enhancement surgeries performed in the United States, which is primarily due to the fact that they tend to look and feel more supple and natural.
The silicone gel more closely resembles natural breast tissue than saline, allowing your plastic surgeon to achieve the best augmentation results possible. Silicone implants also come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, giving you every option to realizing your ideal breast outcome.
The alternative to silicone is saline. This type of breast implant is available to women over the age of 18 for both cosmetic and reconstruction objectives. Although the popularity of saline implants has drastically fallen off over the last several years—only 16 percent of all augmentations in 2016 used them—they can still be the best choice for many augmentation surgeries.
Saline implants are inserted as an empty shell and then filled with a sterile salt water solution to the desired level of fullness and firmness once in place. This can be very advantageous as the implants can be adjusted after surgery in order to precisely accomplish the desired size, shape, and symmetry. This approach can reduce the possibility of a noticeable scar following the procedure since a smaller incision is required. The implants can be strategically inserted via the darker tissue surrounding the nipple or through the underarm, known as the axillary technique, by your qualified UCI breast augmentation surgeon. Unfortunately, women often complain that saline implants don’t look or feel as natural as their silicone counterparts. Some even compare them to water balloons.
Choosing the Right Implant
Selecting the appropriate implant for your breast enhancement is more than just choosing the material it’s made out of. There are several other considerations to take into account when deciding on your ideal breast implants. While many women focus only on their perfect cup size, it’s more important to address the overall impact that breast augmentation will have on your figure. The size and shape of your chest, rib cage, and current breast size will play a role in determining what’s right for you. During your personal consultation, your surgeon will recommend the appropriate size and shape that will complement your natural contours and look best on your body based on these factors.
Your surgeon can place your breast implants either directly under your natural breast tissue (subglandular), under your pectoral muscles (submuscular), or a variation of the two can be used. Placing them under the muscle tends to give your breast the most natural look and feel since there’s more tissue covering the implants. The decision on implant placement will be made with your board certified plastic surgeon. The size of the implants, your body shape and size, as well as your goals and expectations will all be taken into consideration when determining the best position.
