Facial Rejuvenation Surgery

A taut, youthful facial appearance cannot last forever. Life brings all of us many challenges to face as we age. Gravity, sun damage, genetics and other internal and external factors are all working against our skin to cause sagging and drooping of the face. If you are unhappy with sagging that has taken place in your cheeks, jawline or neck, you may benefit from facelift surgery with UCI Plastic Surgery’s team of specialists.

Getting Rid of Sagging Jowls

Unfortunately, there is no fountain of youth of the type movies have led us to believe. Aging is a normal part of being human and just about everyone will struggle with sagging skin at some point in their lives. This can cause you to feel self-conscious about your appearance and may have a negative impact on your levels of self-confidence. While there are several non-surgical procedures that can be used to prolong your face’s youthful look, once drooping or sagging begins to set in, a facelift is often the go-to procedure.

The reason that the facelift is so effective is because it gets rid of all the excess skin and tissue that is left drooping off the lower portion of your face and causing issues such as jowls. This is a problem that occurs once your skin begins to lose elasticity, and often is very difficult to fully correct without surgery. By trimming away this excess skin and repairing the underlying structure of your face, a facelift can help you to look younger with ongoing results.

How Will Your Facelift Be Performed?

When you come in for your consultation with one of our Costa Mesa plastic surgeons, we will carefully analyze the condition of your face and come up with a proper treatment plan based on the look you want to achieve.

Your surgery will be performed under general anesthesia and will consist of incisions that begin around each one of your temples. The incisions will travel downward along the hairline, around the front of your ear, and back down to the base of your hair. From here, we can reshape the underlying tissue and muscle to restore the youthful shape and contour of your cheeks, chin and neck. Your skin is then carefully and tightly pulled back over to achieve a natural, firm appearance. Any excess skin will be removed and your incisions will be closed with sutures.

A facelift can also be performed along with other facial surgeries such as a brow lift, neck lift or eyelid surgery for increased benefits.

Facelift Recovery

Once your facelift surgery is complete, we will apply any necessary bandages to help your face heal. Surgical drains may be required at incision locations to help drain fluids and minimize swelling of the face. You will need to rest for 2-3 weeks before you are able to return to work and other social activities.

Bruising and swelling will fade over the course of about a month or two, but you may be able to conceal any signs of surgery by using makeup or other accessories. As your face continues to heal, you will notice that you look much younger than you did before your procedure. Patients are often pleasantly surprised by their youthful appearance when they first see their final results in the mirror. It is often said to be like looking into the past at a younger version of yourself.

The results of your facelift procedure are not permanent, but they can provide you with a younger look that lasts for up to a decade. Once you begin noticing your desired look fade away, you may return for a secondary facelift or additional surgeries to maintain a youthful look.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Good candidates for a facelift procedure tend to be healthy women and men whose skin has lost its tautness, producing sagging in the jowl and neck area, and who may also have developed prominent facial wrinkles and folds. Oftentimes, many of our patients realize that they’re ready for the more in-depth facelift procedure when their injectable filler treatments no longer produce the desired results. This typically occurs after the age of 40, but every patient’s needs are unique. While some individuals are able to put off surgery for many years; some younger patients may begin to notice more pronounced signs of aging earlier in life and choose to undergo this treatment too.

The ideal facelift candidates also have good skin elasticity and a strong bone structure. In order to eliminate deep wrinkles, lines, and folds, the facial skin is stretched, and the excess is removed. Having softer, more elastic skin can give your facelift result a smoother, more refined appearance. A robust underlying bone structure will also help your surgeon achieve the best results. If you have weaker facial features, you may also want to consider facial implants or dermal fillers to improve the underlying structures.

It’s also important that facelift candidates are physically healthy, emotionally stable, and have realistic expectations as to what this procedure can accomplish. Healthy individuals are those who do not smoke or have medical conditions that impair healing.

Your Personal Consultation

A one-on-one consultation will be the very first step you’ll take on the road to revitalizing your appearance with a facelift. Your UCI plastic surgeon will thoroughly review your medical history and discuss your goals and expectations for this procedure. Your skin and facial structures will then be evaluated in order to determine the appropriate approach to restoring a more youthful image to your face. Your hairline will also be examined so that your surgeon can be sure to place the incisions as inconspicuously as possible. During this time, your surgeon will likely take some “before” photos to compare with the final outcome.

Getting Ready for Your Facelift

Prior to surgery, you will be provided with pre-operative instructions that will help to set you up for a successful operation. These guidelines will likely recommend that you stop the use of certain medications like aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and blood thinners in the weeks leading up to your facelift, as all of these pharmaceuticals can increase the risk of bleeding. Certain herbal and vitamin supplements may work to heighten the chances of excessive bleeding as well. In addition to eliminating medications that may possibly be problematic, your surgeon may prescribe antibiotics to ward off a potential infection after the surgery.

It’s also crucial that you do not smoke. Smoking can diminish blood flow to the face, and, as a result, some smokers may experience necrosis, or skin death, at the incision sites if they continue to smoke before and after surgery. Most plastic surgeons recommend that their patients quit smoking for the month prior to and the month following surgery.
