Tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is a popular and highly requested cosmetic procedure. This procedure surgically removes excess fat, tissue, and skin from the abdominal region and repairs the underlying, weakened muscles. The result is a more toned and contoured abdomen. While the road to recovery may differ from patient to patient, there are general guidelines to keep in mind when preparing for your tummy tuck surgery to ensure a successful surgery and beautiful results.

Understanding the tummy tuck recovery timeline is an important part of preparing for surgery and knowing what to expect during each stage of healing.

Tummy Tuck Recovery: What to Expect

Patients should plan for at least two weeks off work as the body enters the initial healing phase. If you have a physically demanding job, expect to be out of work for a few more weeks. If your tummy tuck is performed at UCI, our team will provide a comprehensive post-op action plan, including detailed instructions and follow-up appointments to evaluate progress.

Tummy tucks are performed on an outpatient basis, so you’ll be able to return home sooner after surgery. Here is what you can expect during your tummy tuck recovery:

Weeks 1–2: Initial Recovery

  • Bruising, swelling, and tenderness are expected at the treatment site.
  • Drains will be strategically placed during surgery and remain in place until volume is low enough for proper removal (one to two weeks postoperatively).
  • You’ll be fitted with a compression garment that should be worn as prescribed by your surgeon. This helps swelling subside, while ensuring new contours take shape over time.
  • Engage in light walking and low-intensity activity to boost blood flow and help prevent blood clots from forming.
  • Prioritize rest and arrange for help with your daily activities.
  • You may be advised to sleep in a slightly bent position at the waist to reduce tension on the incision.

Weeks 2–4: Early Healing Phase

  • Avoid strenuous activities—including heavy lifting—for at least two to four weeks.
  • Recruit reliable help with household and childcare duties for the first few weeks.
  • You may begin to feel strong enough to stand tall without discomfort.
  • Results will begin to reveal themselves as subsequent swelling dissipates.
  • Sutures will dissolve on their own.
  • Many patients begin returning to light daily routines during this phase, depending on their recovery progress.
  • Swelling and abdominal tightness are still common during this stage and will continue to improve gradually.

Weeks 4–6: Gradual Return to Activities

  • You can begin incorporating some cardio and core workouts back into your routine four to six weeks after your tummy tuck, once cleared by your surgeon.
  • While you may feel significantly better during this time, it is important not to rush more strenuous activities.
  • Most patients can resume their regular daily activities, although high-impact exercise should still be approached cautiously.

Months 3–6: Final Healing and Results

  • Residual swelling continues to resolve during this time, and final abdominal contours gradually become more apparent.
  • While most tummy tuck recovery takes four to six weeks, final results may take three to six months.
  • Be patient with the process and follow all post-op instructions as detailed by your surgeon and medical team.
  • Incision lines will continue to fade over time, although some visibility is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tummy Tuck Recovery

How long does it take to fully recover from a tummy tuck?

Most patients recover from the initial phase of tummy tuck surgery within four to six weeks of their surgery. However, complete resolution of swelling and final results can take three to six months or longer, depending on the individual.

When can I return to work after a tummy tuck?

Most patients can return to work within two weeks, especially if their job is not physically demanding. Jobs that require heavy lifting or strenuous activity may require additional time off.

When can I exercise after a tummy tuck?

Light walking is encouraged early in the recovery process, but patients should avoid more strenuous exercise for several weeks. Most patients can gradually resume exercise around four to six weeks after tummy tuck surgery once cleared by their plastic surgeon.

What is normal during tummy tuck recovery?

Most patients experience swelling, bruising, tightness, and mild discomfort during the early stages of their tummy tuck recovery. These symptoms gradually improve over time as the body heals.
