Breast cancer can affect far more than physical health. From navigating treatment decisions to considering breast reconstruction and adjusting to life during and after cancer care, patients may face important choices throughout their journey.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UCI Plastic Surgery is proud to host its 10th Annual Breast Awareness Event on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. This special evening will bring together UCI physicians, staff, patients, and members of the community for an educational discussion focused on breast care, breast cancer research, wellness, and breast cancer reconstruction and other breast procedures.
The event will be held at Twenty Eight Restaurant in Irvine, California, and the first 70 guests to RSVP will receive swag bag giveaways.
An Evening Dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness and Education
Now in its 10th year, UCI Plastic Surgery’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event has provided an opportunity to bring greater attention to breast health and the care available to people affected by breast cancer.
This year’s event continues that tradition with an evening centered on education and connection. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear from UCI specialists representing different areas of breast health and care.
The featured speakers are:
- Dr. Gregory Evans
- Dr. Gordon Lee
- Dr. Nicole Conkling
- Dr. Kari Kansal
- Dr. Karen Lane
Together, the featured speakers will offer perspectives on breast health and care, providing attendees with an opportunity to learn more about topics relevant to breast cancer awareness.
Understanding Breast Reconstruction After Breast Cancer
For patients who undergo a mastectomy or other breast cancer surgery, breast reconstruction may be one option to consider as part of treatment planning. Reconstruction can be performed using breast implants, a patient’s own tissue, or a combination of techniques. The appropriate approach depends on many individual factors, including the patient’s anatomy, cancer treatment plan, overall health, previous surgeries, and personal preferences.
The timing of reconstruction can also vary. Some patients may be candidates for reconstruction at the time of their mastectomy, while others may undergo delayed reconstruction based on their individual treatment plan and circumstances.
Depending on a patient’s circumstances, breast reconstruction may involve implant-based reconstruction or autologous reconstruction, which uses tissue from another area of the patient’s body to reconstruct the breast. Some patients may also undergo additional procedures at a later stage to improve breast shape, symmetry, or contour.
No single reconstructive technique is appropriate for every patient. Treatment must take into account the patient’s cancer care, individual circumstances, and reconstructive goals. The UCI Plastic Surgery team works collaboratively with other specialists involved in breast cancer treatment to help determine an appropriate plan for each patient.
A plastic surgeon can explain the available reconstructive options, anticipated stages of treatment, potential problems or issues, recovery, and expected outcomes so patients can make informed decisions about their care.
