About Dr. Alsayed

Dr. Alsayed’s path to Hand and reconstructive surgery is uniquely extensive. After earning his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Medical Sciences and Technology in Khartoum, Sudan, he continued his medical career in the United States. He completed five years of General Surgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, followed by three years of Plastic and Reconstructive surgery residency at The Ohio State University. After eight years of residency training, Dr. Alsayed pursued another area of sub-specialty training.

He completed a Hand, Upper Extremity & Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, where he received advanced training in upper extremity reconstruction and transplantation. Hand surgery first appealed to Dr. Alsayed because of its complexity. The hand is a web of intricacies involving bones, nerves, tendons, muscles, blood vessels, and fine anatomy. Rather than being deterred by the demands of this field, he was drawn to the challenge of understanding how these structures work together.

What made this specialty truly meaningful was seeing how dramatically a hand or nerve injury could affect a patient’s life. Even a relatively small injury can disrupt someone’s livelihood, family responsibilities, and ability to perform daily tasks.

“You really don’t realize how much you rely on your hands until they’re injured. It’s the portal through which we interact with the world…Hand surgery is a challenge, but it’s deeply impactful.” – Dr. Alsayed

Dr. Alsayed attended medical school in Sudan, where he trained in a resource-limited environment. This taught him that caring for patients extends beyond traditional medical duties. Medical students regularly bought medications, supplies, saline, drains, and other necessities. Rather than viewing that kind of assistance as exceptional, it created a culture in which advocacy was simply part of being a physician. Today, those experiences continue to keep him grounded and remind Dr. Alsayed that his responsibility does not end with the technical aspects of surgery.

He remains engaged in humanitarian medicine and has participated in rural medical missions, medical and community outreach, fundraising, and healthcare-related volunteer efforts in both the United States and Sudan.

“You always have to remember, you’re not just a surgeon. You’re also human. You’re a friend. Patients look for someone who can provide that comfort.” – Dr. Alsayed

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Alsayed’s expertise brings together the precision of hand surgery with advanced training in peripheral nerve and microvascular reconstruction. This combination allows him to approach complex injuries from multiple angles—considering not only the damaged structure itself, but also how the injury may affect sensation, movement, pain, and daily life.

His areas of expertise and clinical interest include:

  • Hand and wrist surgery
  • Hand and upper extremity trauma
  • Peripheral nerve surgery: nerve decompression, repair and nerve transfer
  • Tendon and soft-tissue reconstruction
  • Microsurgery and free flap reconstruction
  • Brachial plexus and complex nerve injuries
  • Amputation-related nerve conditions, including phantom limb and residual limb pain surgery
  • Complex limb reconstructive surgery

Hand surgery and peripheral nerve surgery are particular areas of interest.

For patients who have experienced severe accidents or multiple injuries, restoring the hand can have an important role in their overall rehabilitation and ability to regain independence. He also treats traumatic nerve injuries that may require nerve repair or nerve transfer. Patients with nerve injuries may experience weakness, numbness, loss of function, or significant pain. Dr. Alsayed has treated patients with complex concerns and recognizes that surgery may be only one part of their care. For that reason, he strongly favors a multidisciplinary approach. Depending on the patient’s needs, care may involve collaboration with pain specialists, rehabilitation professionals, orthopedic surgeons, and other specialists.

Patient Care Philosophy: Your Advocate From Beginning to End

Dr. Alsayed understands that complex hand, nerve, and reconstructive conditions rarely come with simple answers. Recovery may require rehabilitation, multiple operations, or additional procedures, and improvement may take months rather than happen immediately.
His approach is direct and collaborative. He explains the diagnosis, discusses the available options, and works with patients to establish realistic expectations based on what they hope to regain. Dr. Alsayed also values the long-term relationship that often develops through reconstructive care. Some patients are under his care for six months, a year, or longer as they progress through surgery. Dr. Alsayed considers that continuity of care—and the relationship built along the way—the most rewarding part of his work.

Patients dealing with pain, impaired function, or uncertainty about their future may carry a psychological and emotional weight in addition to the physical burden. He wants patients to feel comfortable asking questions and participate actively in decisions about their care. When another physician or specialty is better suited for a particular problem, Dr. Alsayed believes making the appropriate referral is part of being the patient’s advocate.

Ultimately, Dr. Alsayed believes a successful result should be measured by the goals he and the patient establish together before surgery.

“It all comes back to the patient. It’s a shared decision-making process, leading to reasonable expectations by the patient, and meeting those expectations is what makes an operation successful.” – Dr. Alsayed

Research & Academic Contributions

Research plays an essential role in Dr. Alsayed’s approach to surgery and patient care, particularly in peripheral nerve surgery, where new techniques and evidence continue to shape treatment options. Research-based questions often arise in the operating room when a case is challenging. This allows surgeons to stay current with the latest findings. Dr. Alsayed doesn’t shy away from new procedures if he believes it will help the patient.

“You’re with the patient for a long time…they become family.” – Dr. Alsayed
