Blepharoplasty: What to Expect

Sagging and droopiness of the eyelids is a telltale sign of age. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is an effective solution for alleviating signs of aging in the area around the eyes, but it’s important to know what to expect from the outcome of the procedure.

When you consult with one of the experienced physicians at UCI Plastic Surgery, we will discuss all aspects of eyelid surgery, including the recovery, achievable results, and other things to expect after blepharoplasty. We welcome patients throughout Southern California to our offices in Orange, Costa Mesa, and Tustin.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

Eyelid surgery is performed under general anesthesia. You will not be awake during the procedure. Our plastic surgeons precisely remove extra fat and hanging skin through tiny incisions. We can focus exclusively on the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or perform surgery on both eyelids simultaneously, depending on your needs and goals.

The surgery itself lasts, on average, between two and three hours. At UCI Plastic Surgery, our goal is always to help you look your best while maintaining a natural look.

Recovery after Blepharoplasty

As with most plastic surgery procedures, there will likely be swelling in and around the surgical site. You may experience discomfort around the eyes for a couple of days, but this is manageable with medication we provide. You may also experience dry, irritated eyes and blurry vision, but these are temporary side effects.

The entire recovery process can last for one to two weeks. After that, you will be able to wear eye makeup, go for a swim, put in contact lenses, and resume other aspects of your usual routine.

When Will Results Be Apparent?

You will likely start to see results from your blepharoplasty soon after the initial recovery period. The change will not be instantaneous, but most patients notice a rejuvenation and lightening of the eyelids within a few weeks of the procedure.

The timeline of results is not uniform for all patients. Some patients heal faster than others. Those who heal quickly are more likely to begin seeing positive changes sooner than those who recover at a slower pace.

The important thing to remember during recovery and the period afterward is that UCI Plastic Surgery will take all precautions to help you achieve your optimal outcome. We engage in extensive pre-surgery planning prior to blepharoplasty, working with you closely to answer questions, discuss post-operative recovery, and more so you feel confident in your choice.

We can also discuss injectables, facials, laser treatments, and other non-surgical services that can help you maintain and augment the results of your blepharoplasty.
